What are roof Upstands?
An upstand is the fixture that keeps the glazed unit from coming into contact with the surface of the roof and is needed for most building regulations. Upstands need to protrude by a minimum of 150mm above the roof and have a pitch of a minimum of three degrees.
How much does a flat roof upstand cost?
Ensure that upstands and flashings are suitable for the roof covering, a minimum 150mm upstand is usually required. Drainage outlet positions are also critical to avoid ponding.

What is EPDM rubber roofing?
What is EPDM? Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (M-class), or EPDM, is a synthetic rubber that is extremely durable and used across a variety of applications. EPDM is heat and weather resistant with its two main ingredients derived from natural gas and oil, making it an ideal flat roofing material.
Is insulating your roof worth it?
Well-insulated homes can better regulate temperatures and so they feel more comfortable, even in the peak of summer and the middle of winter. Insulation will help prevent heat from escaping when you turn your heater on in winter and it’ll make using air conditioning more energy efficient too.

Can you turn a cold roof into a warm roof?
Cold bridging occurs when there is a continuous path created through the insulation. If an existing cold roof is to be refurbished, consideration should be given to converting the design to a warm roof, or incorporating new insulation into the roofing system to improve thermal performance.
What are upstands in a flat roof?
These are small sections of insulation which are positioned vertically around the edges of some constructions of flat roofs. This is similar to the upstands used in concrete floor insulation. The main reason for using these when insulating a roof is to prevent thermal bridging at the junction between the roof and the exterior walls.
Can I use purlcrete as an insulation upstand for a flat roof?
The only exception is Styrozone flat roofs, where we recommend using Purlcrete as the upstand. If there is a cavity insulation board in the parapet, this should be taken up as high as the flat roof insulation upstand to prevent thermal bridging through this.
How far apart should insulation upstands be?
Generally we recommend that there should be a minimum distance of 300 mm maintained between the top of the insulation upstand and the bottom of the horizontal roof insulation. A 25 mm thick Kingspan Thermaroof TR27 upstand should be used around the perimeter of the roof on the internal façade of parapets.
